Introduction

In 1970, legendary director Orson Welles (Citizen Kane) began filming what would ultimately become his final film, starring a stellar cast that included John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, and Welles’s late collaborator Oja Kodar. But production was halted in 1976 by financial problems, and it quickly became infamous within the industry as unfinished and unreleased. After Welles’s death, more than a thousand reels of film sat in Paris for 30 years until March 2017, when producers Frank Marshall (who served as production manager during the initial shooting of Wind) and Philip Jan Ressa took the lead in completing Welles’ vision. Featuring a new score by Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and edited by a technical team including Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski (The Hurt Locker), The Other Side of the Wind tells the story of renowned filmmaker J.J. "Jack" Hannaford (Huston), who returns to Hollywood after years of wandering around Europe ready to make a revolutionary comeback. Welles's final film, satirizing both the classic studio system of the time and the new institutions that wanted to disrupt the old order of the film industry, is both a fascinating microcosm of long-gone filmmaking history and a highly anticipated "new" film from a master director.
