Set in the idyllic yet fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, The Aerobics tells the story of Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly suffering, seemingly dutiful housewife who supports her smart but controversial husband's run for the State Assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly humorous life that she rarely lets the world see. She's also battling a complex set of personal demons that have to do with her self-image...that is, until she finds relief through the most unlikely source: the world of aerobics. In Season 2, Byrne successfully launches her first fitness video, only to run into some new and bigger obstacles in her path. She's torn between her loyalty to her husband (Rory Scoville) and the values he represents, and her dangerous attraction to other people. Now that she's no longer the only game in town, she finds herself having to outdo some fierce new competitors on her way to building a full-blown fitness empire.
