In the early 17th century, after a long period of conquest and annexation, the Japanese Warring States period came to an end and entered the era of the Tokugawa shogunate. Peace came, but a large number of samurai were displaced and forced to make a living. During this period, some ronin asked to commit seppuku in front of the nobles to save their face, some were retained, and some received material assistance, but there were many blackmailers. One day, the famous Ii family welcomed a young ronin named Chi Chiyan (played by Eita). In order to put an end to this evil trend, the Ii family pretended to be real and forced Chi Chiyan to die tragically in an undignified way. It was thought that this would deter the blackmailing ronin, but soon after, another middle-aged samurai named Tsukumo Hanshiro (played by Ichikawa Ebizō) came to seek death... This film is based on the novel "Strange Ronin Ki" by Yasuhiko Takiguchi, which was adapted into a film by the famous craftsman Masaki Kobayashi in 1962.
