The story takes place in the United States in 1965. A 10-year-old girl named Charlie (Brittany Robertson) lives with her seriously ill mother. One day, a man named Church (Eddie Murphy) knocked on the door of Charlie's house. He came here to take care of the poor mother and daughter. His term was very short, only 6 months. However, Mr. Church stayed at Charlie's house for six years. Under his guidance, Charlie, who had no goals, began to want to become a writer. After her mother died, Charlie gradually lost contact with Mr. Church and embarked on her own life path. In the second year of college, Charlie found that she was pregnant.
