On November 13, 2007, with the support of the Hongdao Elderly Welfare Foundation, 17 seniors, with an average age of 81, began a 13-day motorcycle tour around the island. They set out from Taichung and traveled south through Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Yilan, Taipei, and back to Taichung. The total distance was 1,178 kilometers! Among the 17 seniors, two had cancer, four needed hearing aids, and five had high blood pressure. They experienced the precipitous Suhua Highway on the way, and the group leader went in and out of the hospital three times. However, they overcame difficulties one by one, and completed this "impossible dream" in the eyes of outsiders with fearless hearts and passionate actions. The life experiences of the 17 seniors were different. Some of them came from Taiwan, and some came to Taiwan with the Kuomintang army. Their occupations included police, veterans, pastors, calligraphy teachers, barbers, etc. What's more interesting is that some grandfathers from other provinces could not speak Taiwanese, but in order to communicate with their companions from the province, they spoke each other's language with a heavy accent, which was a very interesting scene. After 13 days of traveling around the island, 16 grandfathers and 1 grandmother went from being strangers to developing a family-like relationship. They all said that they felt younger and more energetic!
